Nigel Hawke’s Thorne Farm Racing Blog – Friday 18th February 2019

There is nothing much to report this week so I thought it was a good opportunity to discuss Brexit, not really. The BHA we’re in full panic mode this week, not really achieving much other than costing owners more money, the whole vaccination system is not fool proof and should be reviewed and revamped. There are some people who don’t vaccinate at all, some because of the cost and some because they don’t believe in the theory of vaccinating a supposedly healthy horse. This is where the problem lies and it needs addressing, most people adhere to the rules of the BHA but unfortunately there are still some that think they know better. A more serious threat is herpes and it’s not even compulsory but believe me when a horse contracts herpes it takes a lot longer to recover than the flu. We have two mares going to Ireland to visit Getaway, Rejaah and Pomme are both very well bred and should make very successful brood mares. Pomme was hard to train but very decent on her day and Rejaah was a very high achiever winning on the flat, hurdles and fences and in listed company. Pomme is in foal to Sageburg and is due fairly soon.
