Nigel Hawke’s Thorne Farm Racing

Blog –

Friday 3rd May 2019

First blog of the new season and the clock goes back to zero for everyone.

A quick summary on the season just gone. Sixteen winners altogether and that’s after a virtual shutdown after Xmas with the flu jab fiasco, not to mention the ground was wrong all season for half of our horses some horses only ran twice and that was risking it, I don’t remember a dry time like it. But that also means we have a lot of nice horse to run next season that have still to make their racecourse debut.

Regular readers of the blog will notice there’s an addition to the website called meet Nigel Hawke, it’s only two minutes long but it’s an excellent piece and shows the yard and facilities in all their glory. Filmed by a drone it swoops over Thorne Farm like an eagle looking down on this fantastic piece of Devon that’s got everything you could possibly need to get a horse fit and keep it happy. From the drone you can see the gallop, schooling ground, sand gallop, turn out paddocks, lung ring and main barn, it really is worth a watch.

I suppose we should mention Ruby’s retirement, an absolute horseman firstly, I’m not sure any other jockey has won two gold cups and two grand nationals (Nigel only won one) he was a pleasure to watch ride especially on a difficult two mile novice chaser. He will be missed but he’s not dead and will still be on our screens as a pundit.
