Nigel Hawke’s Thorne Farm Racing

Blog –

Friday 10th May 2019

This is the time of the year when we do a bit of a rebuild, some new horses and improvements to our yard.

As we speak we are in the process of acquiring some new horses form Ireland, hopefully they will be top class but our budget restricts us. That is the difference between small yards and the big yards, they can go and buy the best young horses regardless of the price and if there not good enough they move on, very much like the premier league clubs.

Racing is a bit different though as you can’t just discard the horse if he’s no good and we try to find alternative jobs for them, it’s amazing how many brood mares were useless racehorses but very successful at stud.

We have acquired some more land to extend our facility, it’s been used as a schooling ground and it is perfect, alongside the hurdles and fences we have a three furlong grass gallop which is ideal for teaching the young horses how to gallop and is great for giving them a good blow out.
