Nigel Hawke’s Thorne Farm Racing Blog Friday 18th May 2018

It has been another busy week here at Thorne Farm. We have had runners most days this week at Kempton, Wincanton, Newton Abbot and Aintree. We also have runners at Uttoxeter on Saturday.

We cannot forget Kempton on Monday as Level of Intensity brought home our first winner of the 2018/19 season. He won the Matchbook VIP Handicap Hurdle very Impressively by 5 lengths and was still drawing clear under Sean Bowen. Nigel Says, ‘could not be happier, he won it well and there’s a possibility he might be out again this week’.

Level of Intensity wins at Kempton under Sean Bowen.

On Sunday Katherine Hawke had a wonderful day at Trebudannon Point to Point. Her first runner of the day Sapphire Noire ran brilliantly to finish 2nd only beaten a length. Speronimo ran later in the day to win the Maiden by 3 lengths. Kieren Buckley our yard amateur confidently rode both horses and gave them a peach of a ride.

On the way back home from Newton Abbot on Wednesday Katherine and Nigel went to Cothelstone Point to Point. Thorne Farm Racing and Junction 24 sponsored the Open Maiden race. The race was split into 2 divisions and the first division was won by Massini’s Blade who is trained by Michael and Sheila Watson who regularly use the Thorne Farm Gallops.

As well as being busy with racing it’s all go at home on the yard. More horses have been turned out for their summer holidays, the team have been busy painting, steam cleaning and making sure the horses that are still in training are still getting ridden out and receiving the best care. We are very lucky here that we have the room to make a small paddock for individual horses so that the ones who are still in full training can still go out for some grass and enjoy the sun on their backs.

Friday 11th May

It has been all systems go for us at Thorne Farm, at the beginning of the week the preparation started for the horses to be turned out for their summer holidays and by Wednesday evening the first lot of 18 horses went out which included our stable star Speredek who has very much earned his. It was so lovely to see the horses enjoying themselves and getting the sun on their backs.

On Thursday Lady Mix went to Worcester. She was partnered by Tom Buckley and ran brilliantly to finish 2nd only beaten by 1 length. Nigel says “she ran a nice race”.
Faction made his first appearance for us this season and ran brilliantly. He was partnered by Connor 0’Farrell to finish 7th. We where delighted with him and he will come on from that race a lot.
We have a quiet weekend ahead with entries, but Katherine Hawke has three entries of her own at Trebudannon Point to Point.
Another exciting opportunity for Thorne Farm is our new Sponsorship. We our now sponsored by Junction 24, this is the owner of Sedgemoor auction centre near Bridgewater markets, conference and events, a familiar successful local business.

Nigel Hawke’s Thorne Farm Racing Blog Week Commencing 23rd April 2018

Nigel Hawke’s Thorne Farm Racing Blog

We have had a fantastic week here at Thorne Farm. It all started on Tuesday at Devon & Exeter Race Course with Georgina Joy finishing 2nd partnered by our very own Tom Buckley. Point N Shoot then went on to give Tom Buckley his first ever winner in the Read Noel Fehily at 188Bet Handicap Hurdle, they won by an impressive 9 lengths. Well done Tom Buckley very well deserved.
Not only was it a wonderful day for Tom Buckley but also for the owners John and Audrey Vowels. Point & Shoot was bought by John Vowles & Derek Mead, Katherine Hawkes late father. Their friendship had spanned a legendary period & the name Point & Shoot, with the help of Jayne Vowles, choose the name Point & Shoot to reflect their joint sporting passion which they had been lucky enough to enjoy together for many years.

Point N Shoot winning at Exeter

Straight after this fantastic win, Sienna Royale raced next & she ran brilliantly to finish 4th and we couldn’t be happier with the promise she is showing.

Thursday was a big day for us all as Speredek ran at Punchestown in a Grade B Handicap Chase. The excitement in the yard was very high. Lucie our travelling head girl and Eddie our assistant trainer went out to Ireland on Monday with Speredek to get him ready for the big day. Nigel & Katherine Hawke flew out on the Thursday morning with the Kapinhand owners. David Noonan partnered Speredek to finish a brilliant 8th out of 24 runners & with the ground changing from soft to good we can only dream about what may have happened if it had continued raining !

Eddie Buckley and Speredek exercising at Punchestown!

On Saturday Double Captain trained by Katherine Hawke went to Trebudannon Point to Point. He was partnered by Naomi Sims and won the Ladies Open by an impressive 15 lengths. This was his 3rd win of the season, a partnership that has to be massively congratulated & certainly has the wow factor ! On Sunday Keiran Buckley was second on Speronimo in the Maiden at Axe Vale Point to Point he ran a much improved race. Keiran Buckley then went on to win for Joe Tickle, congratulations to you both. Keiran & Joe are a huge part of our team at Thorne Farm but this is also an example of how people who hire our wonderful gallop, ( Thorne Farm Gallop Hire), are also churning out the winners this season.

Naomi sims and Double Captain

Not only did we have a wonderful week in the yard, Katie Bennett our Assistant Head Girl had a great weekend in Wales at the David Broome Show Jumping Centre with her pony Prince. It was the winter league finals in which Katie won 3 out of 5 of her classes in very competitive company.

Katie Bennett and her pony Prince

Ruby Wetherall, Nigel Hawkes Step daughter, also had a successful weekend. Ruby qualified for the Pony Club gymkhana finals held on the 1st July. Ruby & her team will be representing Tiverton Pony Club. Her very cheeky pony Cameo was awesome & for the flag race a photo finish was nearly called for !! Fingers crossed the success will continue for us all here at Thorne Farm Racing.

Nigel Hawke’s Thorne Farm Racing Blog- 20th April 2018

It was lovely to see Tiger Roll win the Randox Health Grand National on Saturday. We bought Tiger Roll at Doncaster August sales in 2013 and we went on to win a Juvenile Hurdle at Market Rasen which he won very well. Tiger Roll was then bought by Gigginstown in the December.Nigel always said he would win the Triumph Hurdle and it is amazing to see Tiger Roll achieve so much more, to think we are part of this is something is very special. We pride ourselves in buying young horses well and choosing excellent quality racehorses at good prices, we are particularly good at producing young horses for the future and Tiger Roll demonstrates this process.

With the sales coming up we will be busy buying our next batch of horses, if you would like us to find and train the next Tiger Roll please get in contact with Nigel on 07769295839.

On Tuesday we were very busy at Exeter with 4 runners. Point N Shoot ran really well to finish 2nd only beaten 5 lengths. Unfortunately Take A Break, Ballymagroarty Boy and Alminar didn’t quite like the ground as much but all came back home safe and sound.
On Thursday we were at Cheltenham with Sheer Poetry who was having her first run for our yard. She showed an encouraging first run for us finishing 6th having not raced since December . Things soon got very exciting with Rejaah as she won the Catesby Estates PLC Mares Handicap Hurdle(listed race), she won by half a length after leading from 2 out in a field of 17. Tom Cannon gave her a peach of a ride & he said she was even having a little buck on the way to the start !

Nigel says ‘ Rejaah won impressively, she is such a tough mare, we will need to wait for Tuesday morning to see how the handicapper views this race and plan from there!’

This weeks entries ahead:

Sunday: Pirolo, Mutoondresdashorse

Monday: Sienna Royale, Sheer Poetry

Tuesday: Georgina Joy, Point N Shoot, Sienna Royale, Speredek

Wednesday: Georgina Joy

Thursday: Speredek
