It’s a promising few weeks for Throne Farm with a few talented upcoming runners!!

Faction ran a good race to finish second at Uttoxeter last night, he’s a consistent sort and might run again next week back at Uttoxeter. Nachi Fallls runs tonight at Chepstow and must have a great chance after his decent second at Newcastle last time, he’s a great little horse to have and will go novice chasing eventually as we’ve already schooled him over fences and he was exceptional. Calin du Brizais could run at Uttoxeter next week, he’s in great form and will be going for a hat trick after his impressive win at Newton Abbot last time. Atlantic King could run there as well, we just got to find the key to him, he’s better than he’s showing at the moment.

Shocked and saddened were the two most used words around a very sombre Thorne Farm on Monday morning. The big boss behind the scenes at Thorne Farm Derek Mead, was killed in a freak accident at his farm at the early age of seventy two. He was a larger than life character who didn’t suffer fools and definitely called a spade a spade, his involvement in the building and upgrading of Thorne Farm was evident everywhere. Derek had a lot of titles but basically he was a very outdoors hands on type of man who liked nothing better than to come to the yard and have a crack with all the lads and lasses then jump on the tractor and start a new project somewhere. He loved his horses and was never giving up on them no matter how badly they performed. On one occasion Derek and his great friend John Vowles claimed a horse from a Worcester sell, in the process upsetting the horses trainer and owner. The  horse won a decent novice chase next time out at Exeter and both mischievous new owners were on hand to see him into the winners enclosure full of smiles and laughter, it was a great day and one that was  repeated in conversation time and time again. Derek will be sadly missed RIP.

This has been a very sad week for all here at Thorne Farm and all over Somerset, we have lost Derek Mead a well known farmer and business man who had a great influence on the farming community and was also involved here at Thorne Farm Racing.

Statement from Derek Mead’s family on 05.06.17

It is with heavy hearts that we have to let you know that our father and grandfather, Derek Mead was killed in a tragic accident on his farm in North Somerset on the afternoon of Sunday 4th June, 2017.  He was doing what he loved and had been doing since he was a young boy. The family thank you all for your kind messages during this hard time and would greatly appreciate it if you could allow us the time to come to terms with this terrible loss.

Last week we had a smashing start to the season!

We are off to a good start this season with Calin Du Brizais winning on Tuesday at Newton Abbot. This gives us our first winner of the new season! He battled through hard to beat the Paul Nicholls trained Braqueur D’Or and win by a neck. Calin has been a very consistent horse without winning and never really runs a bad race, he might run again at Newton Abbot on Monday. We have a few other runners, Nachi Falls runs Saturday on the flat at Newcastle and Lord Ballim runs on Sunday at Perth. They’re both in great form so we’re hoping for the best. Atlantic King is entered for Newton Abbot on Monday and is having his first run back since having a wind op, he’s got plenty of ability so let’s hope it’s done the trick. We have bought two horses from the Doncaster sales last week, a nice four year old by Fair mix who’s a half-brother to a winner, he’s a good size and ready to kick on. The other one is a three year old filly by Sholokov and she’s a half-sister to Pearl Royal who we think very highly of, she very well made and has a lovely temperament.
