First blog of the new season and the clock goes back to zero for everyone.

A quick summary on the season just gone. Sixteen winners altogether and that’s after a virtual shutdown after Xmas with the flu jab fiasco, not to mention the ground was wrong all season for half of our horses some horses only ran twice and that was risking it, I don’t remember a dry time like it. But that also means we have a lot of nice horse to run next season that have still to make their racecourse debut.

Regular readers of the blog will notice there’s an addition to the website called meet Nigel Hawke, it’s only two minutes long but it’s an excellent piece and shows the yard and facilities in all their glory. Filmed by a drone it swoops over Thorne Farm like an eagle looking down on this fantastic piece of Devon that’s got everything you could possibly need to get a horse fit and keep it happy. From the drone you can see the gallop, schooling ground, sand gallop, turn out paddocks, lung ring and main barn, it really is worth a watch.

I suppose we should mention Ruby’s retirement, an absolute horseman firstly, I’m not sure any other jockey has won two gold cups and two grand nationals (Nigel only won one) he was a pleasure to watch ride especially on a difficult two mile novice chaser. He will be missed but he’s not dead and will still be on our screens as a pundit.

Purple patch for Thorne Farm with two winners in the last four days. Farmer Boy won at Market Rasen on Sunday for the first time.

He’s a tricky customer and can be a difficult ride but Conor o Farrell gave him a great ride and he got his head in front thankfully. A lot of work went into this horse at home and to see it was worthwhile was very pleasing.

Lamh Ar Lamh won again back at Taunton on Wednesday and is turning into a course specialist, always travelling well she pulled her way to the front and stayed on well, strongly ridden by Tom Buckley who rode his first winner on the same day last year and has now ridden seven in total he’s improving all the time.

On Tuesday we let out twenty horses to grass and it’s always a bit of a worry even though we sedate all of them there’s usually one or two that tends to be a bit over enthusiastic so it’s nice to see them all settled down with heads down grazing.

Point n Shoot hacked up at Sedgefield last week, he is a bit of an enigma and in many ways a strange horse.

He can be quite miserable in the box and is happiest left alone most of the time but when he wins he always wins easily.

At Sedgefield he demolished basically the same field that he could only finish third to the previous time on ground that was probably too fast as well.

He’s now won three races since a life threatening injury happened a few years back so it’s a big thanks to the staff at Thorne Farm who nursed him back to full health and then to the winners enclosure. Ridden by our conditional Tom Buckley who gets on really well with him having had his first win on him at Exeter last year.

Pomme has had a colt foal by Sageburg and is visiting Getaway next. Pomme was a very good but unlucky on the track but it looks like the bad luck is over as the foal is a cracker so look out for him in a few years as he could be a bit special.

Nachi Falls nearly pulled it off at Taunton on Thursday.

He travelled and jumped like his old self just getting caught on the run in by the favourite. It was a massive step in the right direction for the horse as he’s had his problems so hopefully he can build on yesterday’s performance and get back in the winners enclosure, he’s a yard favourite with everyone and a pleasure to have in the yard, he could possibly run again on Tuesday at Southwell if he’s ok.

Over the next few weeks we have some four year olds having their first runs in bumpers, they seem a very nice bunch at the moment so we’re really looking forward to getting them on the track and while some might not actually win a bumper it’s always a good starting point, they learn a lot about racing and we learn a lot about them.

Of course it’s the national this week and as everyone knows we have a connection with Aintree, Nigel somehow rode Segram to win and then the Ex Thorne Farm Tiger Roll won it last year. We will all be cheering him on again this year.
