Thorne Farm Gallops
Our Gallops are becoming well known in the area and are designed specifically to take advantage of the wonderful topography that Thorne Farm offers. It starts at the bottom of the valley rising to just below Stoodleigh Beacon, which is the highest point between Exmoor and Dartmoor at 987ft above sea level. The gallops are 7.5 furlongs long with a carpet fibre surface which rides incredibly well with some cushioning to it. In Nigel’s experience he says it is as good as he has ever seen and is producing some spectacular results.
We also have a sand canter ring that is 3 furlongs round. This has been very beneficial for the young horses and twice a week it is used for Jumping/ schooling with the hurdles strategically placed. Our grass gallop is wonderful old Devon turf that extends to 3.5 furlongs and can be used in all weathers.
Our schooling facilities consist of 3 plain fences and an open ditch, 3 hurdles. Top jockey Tom Scudamore describes our schooling facilities as one of the best as does former top jockey Rodi Greene.
