Nigel Hawke’s Thorne Farm Racing Blog 12 June 2017
Shocked and saddened were the two most used words around a very sombre Thorne Farm on Monday morning. The big boss behind the scenes at Thorne Farm Derek Mead, was killed in a freak accident at his farm at the early age of seventy two. He was a larger than life character who didn’t suffer fools and definitely called a spade a spade, his involvement in the building and upgrading of Thorne Farm was evident everywhere. Derek had a lot of titles but basically he was a very outdoors hands on type of man who liked nothing better than to come to the yard and have a crack with all the lads and lasses then jump on the tractor and start a new project somewhere. He loved his horses and was never giving up on them no matter how badly they performed. On one occasion Derek and his great friend John Vowles claimed a horse from a Worcester sell, in the process upsetting the horses trainer and owner. The horse won a decent novice chase next time out at Exeter and both mischievous new owners were on hand to see him into the winners enclosure full of smiles and laughter, it was a great day and one that was repeated in conversation time and time again. Derek will be sadly missed RIP.
