Nigel Hawke’s Thorne Farm Racing Blog 28 July 2017

A big problem in the racing industry is staff shortages and for as long as I can remember it’s not been any different, if it wasn’t for the kids who go into racing who have a genuine love of horses it would be chaotic. These are our future head lads/girls jockeys and our future trainers but wages are not the answer. Most of the young people in racing have decent cars and the latest mobile phones, they also have a very good social life no different to any other teenagers starting out a working life. So much has been written about conditions of work and long hours etc. but it’s not like working down the mines, if a trainer is treating his staff badly then they can always  leave and if your any good you’ll have another job straight away. The point is that there’s no need for all this so called unpaid long hours and it’s mostly down to the management to make sure that everyone starts and finishes on time in a good working environment because that’s what puts people off more than anything. Brigid Jo runs on Sunday at Uttoxeter, she’s a nice mare by presenting and goes well at home, she will take a couple of runs to learn the game as she’s very green at home but she should have a good future. Nachi Falls runs next Tuesday at Worcester and is going up in trip, we think it should suit him, he schooled over fences this morning and is raring to go.
